Thanksgiving in Spain – Hotel Edition

As you may have read in my post yesterday, we recently booked round-trip tickets from Dallas, TX to Madrid, Spain for $466/each.

Hotels in Spain

Part of our reason for choosing to go to Madrid over Barcelona was due to our search for a SPG hotel. I had roughly 108,000 SPG points in my account. I figured I’d much rather stay at a SPG hotel since I have free SPG Gold Status from my American Express Platinum Card.

Here were the Barcelona options:

Here were the Madrid options:

As you can see, the majority of the SPG hotels in Barcelona were Category 6 (with the exception of the Four Points). This meant that each night would be 20k SPG points with the 5th night being free. However, the SPG hotels in Madrid were both Category 5s. This meant that each night would be 12k SPG points. This was a much better use of points given the value so we settled on The Principal Madrid. We booked our stay for five nights and plan on staying in an airport hotel on the sixth night given that we have to be at the airport at 5am in the morning.

This redemption costs us 48k SPG points since the fifth night is free. This means we are getting roughly 2.9 cents per point. That’s a pretty good redemption value for SPG points plus the hotel looks amazing! Here’s an awesome video that pretty much sold us on this hotel:

For our final night in Spain, I plan on booking the Crowne Plaza – Madrid Airport. Nothing fancy about this one. Just a cheap place ($75/night) to sleep before our long flight back to the US.

Dallas Airport Hotels

Because we are flying out of Dallas Fort-Worth to get to Madrid, we had to find positioning flights from Seattle. This meant that we had to fly in a day early and then on our return leave a day later. In order to do this, we had to find somewhere to rest our weary heads for both nights. The other tricky part is that Southwest only flies in DAL (Love Field), which is about 17 miles away from DFW (Dallas Fort-Worth) airport. We decided to book a hotel near DFW on our outbound flight and a hotel near DAL on our inbound flight.

We found two IHG Candlewood Suites with airport shuttles to respective airports. They each cost 10,000 IHG points. If we had paid cash, it would have cost roughly $80-90/night. This means we are getting roughly 0.85 cents per point. This is great value for IHG points since they are typically only worth 0.5 cents per point.
