Reading the Fine Print

One of the most important pieces to travel hacking and finding deals is reading the fine print. This is where treasures can be found and mistakes can be avoided.

A Recent Example

What better way to demonstrate the importance than a recent mistake that I made by not carefully reading the fine print. My wife and I were shopping at a local mall and stumbled into an Eddie Bauer store. I remembered I had added an AMEX Offer for Eddie Bauer. I quickly opened up my phone to check the offer and noted that I would receive a $25 credit when I spent $100.

What I failed Captain Picard Facepalm Meme | FAIL | image tagged in memes, captain picard facepalm | made w/ Imgflip meme makerto realize was that the AMEX offer was only good for purchases made online. It clearly states in the fine print,

Valid online only. Not valid in store.

Re-order and Return

Because I didn’t read the fine print, we ended up buying the jacket in store. Luckily I realized my error a couple days later before the AMEX offer expired. I was able to buy the same jacket online and plan on returning the one purchased in store. This mistake could have essentially costed me $25.

Anyway, this is your reminder to always read the fine print.
