Yup! You read correctly. We’re going to fly around the world this summer!
This trip has been in the works since around February or March. I’ve been meaning to write about it, but was never quite sure where to start. I decided to break this up into a four part series because otherwise you’d be reading a ridiculously long blog post. Here is our flight path:
By the end of this trip, we’ll have visited five different countries, flown over 25,000 miles, and experienced business or first class on three major airlines. To say we’re excited would be quite the understatement.
Summer in Paris
This whole trip started with a hotel error fare for the Hyatt Regency Paris Étoile. This error fare happened back in June 2016. I was able to book 4 nights in a club room (guaranteed view of the Eiffel Tower and lounge access) for a 3,000 Hyatt points + $25 in taxes per night. That’s a steal considering that this room usually goes for $225/night.
Hotel, but No Flights
Well now we had a hotel booked, but still didn’t have our flights from the US to Europe. I searched for deals and even tried booking Delta flights via Korean Air miles, but failed miserably.
I then found business seats on Singapore Airline’s Houston to Manchester flight around the dates that we needed. You can read more about this booking here: SQ Business Seats: IAH – MAN. This will be our first ever long-haul premium flight. We’re pretty excited!
We obviously don’t live in Houston so we booked Southwest tickets to re-position from Seattle. This flight cost us 11,685 Southwest miles plus taxes/fees of $11.20. Thanks to the Southwest Companion Pass I was able to add my wife as a companion to this flight for just $11.20. We’ll arrive in Houston the day before our Singapore Airline’s flight leaves to ensure we don’t miss it.
Houston has two airports: IAH and HOU. Southwest only flies into HOU, but our Singapore Airline’s flight will leave from the larger airport, IAH. Therefore, we plan on renting a car (for only $23 | thanks to Autoslash.com) and staying at the Hyatt House IAH Airport Hotel for one night (for only $60 | thanks to discounted Hyatt gift cards on CardCash.com).
But Manchester isn’t Paris
Now this didn’t quite solve our problem of getting to Paris for our already booked hotel stay. Luckily, flights to hop around Europe are pretty cheap. We ended up paying $55/person to fly Manchester to Paris on FlyBe.
We’ll spend a few days in Manchester as well as Liverpool before heading down to Paris. There weren’t too many good award options in Manchester so I opted to book a cash stay at the Holiday Inn Express. Then, we booked the Aloft Liverpool for 4,000 SPG points per night.
Europe – 10 Days
This pretty much rounds out the Europe portion of our trip. We’ll be in Europe for 10 days before we take off for Asia. We are excited to head back to Europe for the 3rd time in the past 9 months.
