How to Download Google Maps for Travel

If you’re traveling internationally, be sure to check your phone plan before you leave the country. Some phone plans will charge you extra to use your phone internationally. Other phone plans have free international data.

Either way you should definitely consider downloading Google Maps for offline use. Once you’ve downloaded the map, you’ll be able to use it even on airplane mode. Here’s a step by step guide on how to do it:

1. Search the City You are Visiting

In this example, I am going to use Paris, France.

2. Next Click the Icon with Three Parallel Lines

This will open up the menu below with additional options.

3. Click Offline Maps

You’ll be prompted to save your home map or a custom map.

4. Choose Custom Map

5. Select the Map Area

Google allows you to select the area you want to download for offline access. Choose the area where you’ll be traveling.

6. Download Offline Map

Note that some downloads take up more space than others on your phone.

Google Maps is one of my favorite phone apps. Using your phone instead of one of those paper maps will help you not stick out as a tourist. Believe me when you’re trying to find your way around a new city, you’ll be glad you downloaded the offline map.
